WEDNESDAY’S card at Haydock has been called off due to snow as the bad weather continues to cause havoc for racing.

The Merseyside track was due to stage a valuable seven-race card, featuring the Old Fling Chase.

Haydock has been abandoned due to snow

But four inches of snow fell at the course overnight, forcing the abandonment of the meeting.

Haydock Park tweeted: “Unfortunately due to four inches of snow overnight and substantial rain on Boxing Day, racing has been abandoned on Wednesday 30th December.”

It is the latest fixture lost due to the weather over the Festive period.

Chepstow’s prestigious Welsh Grand National card was scrapped after Storm Bella left the course waterlogged.

The big race has been rescheduled at the South Wales track for January 9.

Sunday’s big meeting at Limerick was also lost to waterlogging, as was today’s meetings at Leicester and Fontwell.

However, this afternoon’s fixture at Limerick has passed an inspection and will go ahead on heavy ground.

Officials at Newbury are confident Tuesday’s meeting – which features the Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle – will go ahead despite wintry weather in the forecast.

The course could be hit by a mix of sleet and snow, with low temperatures on the morning of raceday expected.

Clerk of the course Keith Ottesen said: “We’ve covered up the landings and takeoffs.

“We’re keeping an eye on the weather and we’ll take all the precautions.”
