TOP trainer Henry de Bromhead was said to be ‘disgusted’ by Bob Olinger’s comeback run – after he was beaten at 1-50 in-running.

The Racing Post’s David Jennings said on Upping The Ante that the Grand National-winning hero was shocked one of his stable stars was turned over by 28-1 outsider Home By The Lee.

Bob Olinger, still only seven, has been one of racing’s great mysteries.

A brilliant Ballymore winner at the 2021 Festival, he was lucky in this year’s Turners when Galopin Des Champs slipped after the last.

He has looked far from a natural over fences and was pulled up on his last attempt over the bigger obstacles at the Punchestown Festival.

But back over hurdles at Navan on Sunday he looked to be travelling a dream approaching two out and hit 1-50 on the in-running markets.

That was until he found nothing more under Rachael Blackmore.

Home By The Lee, a totally unfancied outsider, motored up the hill after the last as Bob Olinger spat out fumes.

Now it has emerged Bob Olinger’s run – which for all intents and purposes looked really encouraging – came on the back of a sparkling piece of work.

He was said to have won by half the track at Tipperary ahead of his Navan return.

And it was that promise that reportedly left De Bromhead gutted he was beaten in the Lismullen Hurdle.

David Jennings said: “I walked out of the parade ring with Henry. I was thinking Bob ran a nice race, travelled well, jumped well… Henry will be delighted.

“He was disgusted.

“He could not believe he was beaten – he couldn’t believe he was beaten by Home By The Lee.

“Robbie Power {jockey} was trying to tell him (Henry) the positives.

“But deep down… this horse had done a remarkable piece of work and they were surprised he was beaten.”

Bob Olinger is currently 16-1 for next year’s Stayers’ Hurdle, while he’s 25-1 for a return to fences in the Ryanair.
