PUNTERS who backed three horses named after Liverpool stars Jurgen Klopp, Virgil Van Dijk and Mo Salah were tearing up bet slips after only one of the favourites managed to win.

And that could be a bad omen ahead of the Anfield side’s blockbuster clash against Manchester United on Sunday.

Horses named after Salah, Klopp and Van Dijk all run today

The horse named after the Anfield manager was first up in a five furlong contest at Newcastle.

Klopp was a fortunate winner at the track last month when a race went off without him.

The shambolic scenes meant SEVEN horses were withdrawn, while others returned to go again having already run half a race!

Klopp, who was behind the stalls while the others pelted down the track, won comfortably when the race was finally run.

But there was no such luck this afternoon as jockey Laura Pearson got off to a slow start on Klopp and never recovered as 8-1 chance Loulin won the 4.30.

That ruined the treble for some punters – but there was still the chance of a double from Van Dijk and Mosala.

At least there was until 9-4 favourite Van Dijk went down by a neck to 11-2 shot Crazy Spin.

The Antony Brittain-trained horse saved it very, very late to get going but bolted home to challenge the winner all the way to the line.

With two of three down it was over to Ireland.

Mosala went off as big 5-4 hot favourite in the 5.15 at Dundalk.

The four-year-old, trained by Henry de Bromhead, one of Ireland’s top trainers, went into the race after being beaten by just a head last time out.

The 1m 2f race was picked to suit and Mosala took the spoils with ease.

But that was scant return for a load of punters who backed all three horses in a treble at odds of around 40-1 – but were left empty handed.
