Horses whose names begin with same letter have won Grand National 21 times – as study shows which to avoid this year

A STUDY has revealed which horses to back in this year’s Grand National – and which ones to avoid.

Runners whose names begin with R have won the world’s most famous race 21 times.

Horses whose names begin with the letter R have had the most success in the Grand National

That is good news for Run Wild Fred and Roaring Bull, both entered in this year’s contest.

While any whose names start with I, Q, Z, U, X or Y are the ones to avoid.

Equipment specialists Ruggles dived deep into the Grand National data to spot patterns which could surface in this year’s contest, being run on Saturday, April 10.

And they found that R held the power for punters, with famous Red Rum, Rule The World and Red Marauder among the Aintree champions.

Next best was the letter M with 15 winners, including Many Clouds in 2015, 100-1 outsider Mon Mome in 2009 and Monty’s Pass in 2003.

The late Freddie Starr also had a winner under the letter, with Miinnehoma a 16-1 victor in 1994.

The letter S can also prove lucky for punters, with 14 winners all sharing it, including Silver Birch in 2007 and Seagram in 1991.

Meanwhile, I, Q and Z have totalled just three winners between them.

They were Zoedone in 1883, Quare Times in 1955 and Ilex all the way back in 1890.

While U, X and Y have never had a winner between them.

Back to this year, though, and punters could do well to discard form and potential and just go on name.

Run Wild Fred and Roaring Bull are currently 25-1 and 66-1 to win respectively.

But look at those beginning with M and you have much more appealing odds.

Minella Times catches the eye at 12-1, as does Magic Of Light at 20-1, who came second to Tiger Roll at odds of 66-1 in 2019.

Further down the betting, Milan Native comes in at 33-1, Mister Malarky at 40-1, Musical Slave at 50-1 and rank outsider Monbeg Notorious at 100-1.

Those who fancy a winner beginning with S can go for Secret Reprieve at 14s, the same as Santini, or Shattered Love at 33-1, the same price as Shantou Flyer.

Sub Lieutenant is among the outsiders priced 100-1.

Cloth Cap is currently the 7-2 favourite, with Any Second Now second favourite at 10-1.
