How Sir Alex Ferguson’s advice is spurring on Paul Nicholls as he plots major targets for big horses this season

PAUL NICHOLLS has revealed how Sir Alex Ferguson’s wise words of widsom are spurring him on to a 14th trainer’s title.

The Ditcheat supremo is chasing another championship that would put him just one behind the record of 15 won by Martin Pipe.

Nicholls has revealed the advice Fergie has passed onto him to stay on top of the sport

He looks armed to the tilt with a batallion of superstars in his ranks including the likes of Bravemansgame, Clan Des Obeaux and Frodon.

Managing the various mood swings and personalities of those horses is similar to what Fergie went through during his years of dominance at Old Trafford.

Nicholls, 60, said of all the things Fergie has told him, how to handle egos is one of the most valuable.

As well as the need to keep your squad fresh.

Nicholls told Let’s Talk Racing: “No one team can win the Premier League every year. We’re not going to win the championship every year.

“It’s all about having that squad.

“If you don’t win it’s probably because your squad’s not good enough, so you’ve got to do something about it.

“Some of them [the horses] are on the transfer list and you move them on and get new ones in.

“Never stand still, that’s what Alex always said.

“You’ve always got to be looking forward.”

Nicholls also revealed to Sky Sports Racing the races he sees some of this top stars going for.

Clan Des Obeaux, a horse co-owned by Fergie, looks like going for the Coral Gold Cup (previously the Ladbrokes Trophy) along with Threeunderthrufive.

The former will then go for the King George on Boxing Day, where he was second to runaway winner Tornado Flyer last year.

Bravemansgame, one of 155 horses Nicholls has in training, ‘looks like a tank’ according to Nicholls.

He will have one run before the Boxing Day showpiece, most likely at Ascot.

Meanwhile, Grade 1-winning hurdler Stage Star had a wind op six weeks ago and will go novice chasing this season.
