SCOTTISH-trained Euchen Glen caused a huge 20-1 upset in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes.

Jim Goldie’s stable star stormed up the Sandown hill under top jock Paul Mulrennan, who grinned: “What a little horse he is.”

Euchen Glen caused an upset in the big race at Sandown

It’s a 900-mile round-trip from Goldie’s Renfrewshire yard – and it’s been a long road back for likeable eight-year-old Euchen Glen.

He suffered a career-threatening tendon injury in 2018 and was off for almost two years.

But he has been nursed back to health and is now in the form of his life.

He travelled like a dream throughout and was four and a quarter lengths clear of the even-money favourite Sangarius at the line, with Fox Tal back in third.

Mulrennan said: “I led-up my first ever runner here when I started over 20 years ago at Brian Meehan’s.

“I’ve only had two rides here in the last five years and both have won, so it’s a lucky track for me – well worth the trip down!”

He continued: “Coming back to a mile and a quarter suited the horse, he’s been overracing this season so we stepped back and it’s done the trick.

“That’s the first time this year he has relaxed under me, and I probably ended up getting there too soon.

“Credit to Jim Goldie. The horse was off for almost two years with a bad injury, so to get him back in this sort of form is incredible.

“The Melbourne Cup was a bit of a target, but we will have to see. We’ll enjoy today for now.”

Earlier on the card, Irish raider Lismore bagged the Group 3 Henry II Stakes – as Templegate’s NAP at 14-1.

The huge filly dominated from start to finish under Jamie Spencer and could now be supplemented for the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

Winning trainer Henry De Bromhead was all smiles and even shared a laugh with punters, with one joking: “Isn’t the Gold Cup and Grand National enough for you?”
