Horse Racing

I was a champion jockey destined for the top with £3.8m winnings but quit for life on ‘paradise’ island

Many jockeys dream of becoming champions and reaching the top of their sport. For William Buick, Oisin Murphy, and Ryan Moore, that dream has become a reality. But not every champion jockey continues to compete day in and day out. Some choose a different path.

From the Racetrack to the Barber Shop

Saleem Golam was joint-champion apprentice with Hayley Turner in 2005, but instead of continuing his racing career, he decided to become a barber. It was a surprising choice, but sometimes life takes unexpected turns.

A Career Cut Short

In 2009, Freddy Tylicki became the top apprentice jockey, only to have his career abruptly ended by a devastating fall that left him paralyzed. Forced to leave the racetrack and confined to a wheelchair, Tylicki faced a whole new set of challenges.

Retiring on a High Note

Next in line as the best young jockey was Martin Lane, who succeeded Tylicki in 2010. Despite winning an impressive £3.8 million, Lane made the surprising decision to retire from racing in 2017. At the time of his retirement, Lane had just ridden a winner for Godolphin at Chelmsford and was operating at a 14 percent strike rate – the best of his career. However, the relentless demands of the sport had taken a toll on him.

A New Chapter in Paradise

Instead of continuing his career in racing, Lane decided it was time for a change. He packed his bags and left for a new opportunity on the remote island of Malolo in Fiji. Lane accepted a job as an operations manager at Vunabaka, a luxurious resort development. The island, known for its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, provided a stark contrast to the intense world of horse racing.

Lane explained his decision, saying, "After 13 years of race-riding, I have decided to retire from my career in the saddle to pursue a new opportunity abroad. It has been a difficult decision to make as racing has been a hugely important part of my life and something I have enjoyed immensely since I started my apprenticeship in 2005."

During his racing career, Lane achieved significant milestones, including winning the Grade 1 Sheikhzayedroad in Canada and being crowned champion apprentice in 2010. He expressed gratitude for his time in the racing community and the friendships he made along the way.

Welcome to Paradise

As Lane embarks on his new chapter, the allure of Vunabaka is undeniable. This luxurious resort is situated on Malolo island, offering breathtaking waterfront, ocean, marina, and hilltop views. With villas available for rent or purchase, it's a true oasis away from the pressures of the racetrack. Instead of horses, golf carts are the preferred mode of transportation around the island.

Although Lane's decision to leave the world of horse racing may have surprised some, there's no denying the appeal of a new life in paradise. And who could blame him?
