I’m a 21-year-old student who’s won more than £200,000 thanks to my Grand National fave – even my mum is jealous

A UNIVERSITY student aged just 21 has cashed in to the sum of £200,000 thanks to Grand National favourite Corach Rambler.

And even his MUM is jealous of the horse’s unbridled success on the turf.

A uni student has pocketed £200,000 in winnings thanks to Grand National favourite Corach Rambler

Cameron Sword, a Business Studies undergrad, is part of an ownership group called “The Ramblers”.

And they look after none other than Corach Runner, who has enjoyed successive wins in the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham.

The Lucinda Russell-trained horse is now the 13-2 favourite for this weekend’s Grand National, which boasts total prize money of £1million.

Corach Runner has already fetched his owners £200,000 in winnings.

And the nine-year-old will become Russell’s second champion horse should he succeed on Saturday, with One For Arthur previously triumphing in 2017.

But for owner Sword, just lining up as favourite for the Grand National is worth its weight in gold.

The student, who comes from a horse racing family, only truly got into the sport during the Covid lockdown.

And with winning jockey Derek Fox taking Corach Runner’s reins for the Grand National, even Sword’s mum is starting to become jealous.

Sword said: “Lucinda and Scu (Peter Scudamore, partner) along with their bloodstock agent Paul (McIvor) bought Corach for £17,000 and Lucinda set the syndicate up on the back of that.

“Winning the Ultima the first time at Cheltenham was amazing itself, but to go back there and do it again and now be favourite for the Grand National is just a dream for all of us.

“[My family] went to the Punchestown sales last year and picked up a really expensive horse and I think my mum is quite jealous that she’s spent all this money, and Corach who cost 17 grand is the Grand National favourite!

“The horse has given us absolutely everything. He’s won over £200,000 in prize money and he owes us nothing, but it’s having that dream of winning the Grand National which is so special.

“I think it’s only people in the yard who give Derek (Fox, jockey) the credit he deserves. He’s one of the best and most consistent riders around. He’s a Grand National-winning rider and we couldn’t ask for anyone better to ride our horse.”
