, Incredible 127-1 four-timer for Jim Crowley at York as Battaash wins second Nunthorpe

EVERYTHING Jim Crowley touches turns to gold and he was in sparkling form at York on Friday.

The former champ guided speedball Battaash to back-to-back victories in the Group 1 Nunthorpe to complete a stunning 127-1 four-timer.

Battaash and Jim Crowley won back-to-back Nunthorpe’s

It’s been a summer of love for Crowley, who has enjoyed big winner after big winner.

But Battaash (1-2f), who was the shortest price of his amazing acca, was made to work hard in defence of his crown.

He tanked into contention and looked like winning easily two furlongs out, but the front-running 28-1 shot Que Amoro refused to go down without a fight.

It was nip and tuck for a few strides, but he asserted in the closing stages with Crowley punching the air after the line.

He said: “He had to be a man today. He stuck his neck out and tried very hard.

“We went a serious gallop, there is a real strong tail wind and it blew us over to the stands rail.

“I didn’t want to let the leader get away too far. In the past he has won his races at halfway, but fair play to the second who ran an almighty race

“He has really changed and settled down. He and Bob get on great, he walks around the paddock  at Bob’s pace, they are a match made in heaven.

“He is a horse in a lifetime. It’s been a golden summer, everything seems to be clicking this season.”

Crowley’s day got off to a flyer aboard the John Gosden-trained Alfatik (15-2).

He was a comfortable winner of the opening Sky Bet Handicap before the classy mare Enbihaar (15-8f) stayed on dourly to win the Lonsdale Cup.

Further Group 2 success followed aboard the hugely exciting Minzaal (5-2f), who sprinted clear of a good field in the Gimcrack Stakes and is now on course for next month’s Middle Park.

Crowley said: “Minzaal was very impressive when he won at Salisbury the other day, it was just like a piece of work for him that day but he has taken a big step forward.

“I couldn’t believe how easily he travelled into the race. It’s nice to have found one like him.”
