Jamie Spencer back in the saddle for Brentford Hope at Kempton after SECOND gallops fall KO’d him for three weeks

JAMIE SPENCER has revealed his latest spell on the sidelines came after a SECOND spill on the gallops.

Spencer returns to action at Kempton on Brentford Hope today, three weeks after his initial comeback from a broken hip.

The former champion jockey was crocked in a fall at David Simcock’s yard in mid-April and had five rides last month.

Yet he has had nothing since July 22, after insisting he would make a gradual return from such a lengthy absence.

Now Spencer has revealed he suffered a setback with another tumble at Newmarket.

He revealed: “I just fell on the top of Warren Hill when I was pulling up after a gallop and landed pretty heavily.

“Regardless of whether I’d already been injured or not, it was a painful one and obviously it’s the last thing you need when you’re coming back from one.

“It was nothing serious, but not ideal…but also an occupational hazard. I was a bit lame for a while and a bit sore, but you have to accept it’s part of the job at times.

“It’s like buses…nothing for ages and then two or three come at once. Hopefully that’s my lot now because It all seems fine again.”

Spencer has every chance of making today’s return a winning one, on a horse initially seen as a Classic hopeful.

An impressive win today could still put Richard Hughes’ three-year-old in the St Leger picture – although the jockey isn’t getting carried away just yet.

He added: “We’re just hoping he can start realising his potential and makes up into a good horse.

“He’s always threatened to be decent and we think a lot of him, but let’s get this out of the way before we starting thinking of what next, but I’d be hopeful of him taking a hand.”

Spencer himself plans to follow this afternoon’s ride with another at the weekend, and hopefully heading to York’s Ebor meeting next week.

But he is already planning a full-steam assault on the 2021 season – which KO’d rumours he could be about to call it a day for good.

He said: “I’ll ride Brentford Hope and take it steady. There’s no point in rushing headlong into anything, so I’ll maybe have one ride on Saturday and then see about York after that.

“It really is one day at a time, but I have always said the Ebor meeting is my favourite one of the year, so it would be nice to get back for that.

“So all being well I’ll get this one out of the way, come through another on Saturday and then roll on to York.

“But I am already focusing on 2021 – this season is about getting back on a regular basis really and has pretty much passed me by..

“I plan to ride when it suits, and when I feel comfortable – which will hopefully be pretty much all the time again.

“I want to hit the ground running next season rather than just hit the ground – I’ve had enough of that already!”
