Jim Goldie hopeful ‘remarkable’ Euchen Glen can triumph on scene of most famous day in John Smith’s Cup all over again

TWO years on from his famous win, Euchen Glen could provide one of the stories of the season if he triumphs in the John Smith’s Cup at York.

Jim Goldie’s star suffered a career-threatening tendon injury after his 2018 win in the race on the Knavesmire.

Comeback mission – after 701 days off the track, Euchen Glen has returned with this race as his target

And after 700 days off the track, he’s returned this year in good heart and with only one target on Goldie’s radar.

It would be a remarkable training performance if the seven-year-old can strike again in York’s big handicap.

Scotsman Goldie told Sun Racing: “Two years on, he’s back at the scene of his famous win. There’s a lot of good, young horses in there and the handicapper hasn’t taken many chances with him, but we’ve got him back.

“He showed a wee bit at Haydock in the Old Newton Cup and we think we’ve got him close to what he was before.

“Depending on the draw we might try and make all again, but we might have to sit in if he’s drawn wide.

“This race has always been the target for him though and he’s working as well as ever.

“The year he won it it was one of the best bits of form all year. The second [Thundering Blue] went and won a Group 3 and was third in the Juddmonte International.”

After two warm-up spins, the horse finds himself only 3lbs higher than when a runaway winner of the race.

And his trainer thinks the horse might just be going under the noses of punters at 25-1.

Goldie added: “We were tempted to go for it last year and defend his crown, but we knew that with a tendon you have to be careful, we didn’t want to play Russian roulette.

“He’s a grand horse and he’s still got an engine.

“Australia and the Melbourne Cup is still the dream for him. A few years back we were talking about £2000 races for him, and now we’re talking about that and £60,000 races. He’s been a star.

“The carrot of Australia is there, that’s for sure.

“If we could get him back to win this, what a remarkable story that would be. And he looks a bit big in the betting to me!”
