Jockey Marco Ghiani ordered back to racing school and BANNED for 20 days after incident at Wolverhampton

RISING star jockey Marco Ghiani has been ordered back to racing school and banned for 20 days following an incident at Wolverhampton.

Ghiani, 21, has received bans totalling more than 20 days over the past six months.

But this latest one will see him sent back at the British Racing School as part of the punishment.

Ghiani is one of the hottest jockeys around on the flats.

Based with Stuart Williams in Newmarket, he has recorded seven wins in the past two weeks.

And his six winners already in January are close to the career-best nine he managed in September last year.

But now he will be out of action for just under three weeks after a race at Wolverhampton last month.

Ghiani was found to have allowed his horse – the Michael Bell-trained Fard – to drift right without sufficient correction.

An independent disciplinary panel – separate to the British Horseracing Authority – handed out the ban.

Ghiani cannot ride on January 15 and will miss two weeks from January 20.

The remainder of his suspension is deferred for three months.

He has also been told to go back to the British Racing School on February 2 – but can go at another date if the lockdown prevents him from travelling on that day.

Ghiani, who is from Sardinia, attended the school when he was 16.

Ghiani said: “I’ll be working with my jockey coach to try to make sure I don’t get into this position again.

“I’ve started the new year well and am having a few winners and a few placed horses, so hopefully it can keep going.

“Stuart’s been really supportive and is having a few winners too, so hopefully it can continue.”

Trainer Amy Murphy recently praised Ghiani for his brilliant racing.

She said: “Marco is riding out of his skin and is definitely a jockey to follow.”
