Jockeys blast last minute decision to call off Sedgefield fixture after twelve hour drive ‘for a run and shower’

JOCKEYS have blasted the latest last minute abandonment as Sedgefield lost out to frost.

After FOUR inspections, the track announced racing was cancelled after the original scheduled time of the opening race.

James Bowen had been booked for two rides

Freezing temperatures overnight meant the course called an inspection for 8.30am this morning.

Unable to make a final decision at this point, another inspection was called for 11.30am with the first race pushed back to 1.30pm.

Meanwhile jockeys and trainers made their way to the track.

Yet another inspection was then pencilled in for 12.30pm, and then the decision was finally made that frozen ground meant the track was unraceable.

After Plumpton’s last minute controversy last week and a similar situation at Ffos Las earlier in the month, jockeys were again left frustrated.

Sean Bowen was one of those, and tweeted: “When will something be done about this?

“Should of been of this morning before everybody wasted there time and money getting there.”

Weighing room colleague Charlie Hammond labelled the late call ‘laughable’ and added: “Not their money so what do they care. We are just the puppets and they pull all the strings.”

James Bowen – who had been booked for a pair of rides at the Durham track – was frustrated his 12 hour round-journey came to nothing.

He said: “12 hour round trip for a run and a shower.”

With the ground in some parts clearly still frozen after the scheduled off time, the calls will only grow for a cut-off time for inspections to be introduced.

This may help reduce the wasted journeys to and from the track for connections.
