July Cup runner-by-runner guide

ARTORIUS 5

ART attack. Aussie raider who didn’t get the clearest of runs in the Platinum Jubilee before coming home like a rocket to grab a close-up third. He may have needed that UK debut and will be right there again under Spencer.

Jockey: Jamie Spencer

BLACKROD 3

IN the Black. Won a big-field handicap here in April before a disappointing Wokingham effort when well backed. Trainer is excellent with sprinters and his track record means he can outrun his odds.

Jockey: Connor Beasley

CREATIVE FORCE 4

FEEL the Force. Just pipped by stablemate Naval Crown in the Platinum Jubilee when on the opposite side of the track. That was his seasonal comeback and he can improve on his close-up fifth in this race 12 months ago. A drop of rain would be ideal.

Jockey: William Buick

EMARAATY ANA 2

ANA panner. He’s a Group 1 winner over this trip on fast ground but didn’t get going in the Platinum Jubilee last time. A few questions to answer now.

Jockey: Tom Eaves

NAVAL CROWN 4

CROWN fits. Surprise winner of the Platinum Jubilee at Royal Ascot but he did it the hard way up the near side pretty much alone for a long way. He kept going strongly and can back up that effort with another big run.

Jockey: James Doyle

ALCOHOL FREE 2

FREE not easy. Won a Group 1 over this trip as a juvenile but has been running over further since and found things happening too quickly in the Platinum Jubilee last time.

Jockey: Rob Hornby

DOUBLE OR BUBBLE 2

DOUBLE trouble. Fair run in the Platinum Jubilee after winning a Group 3 on the Rowley course in April. Must raise her game in this company.

Jockey: Jack Mitchell

HAPPY ROMANCE 2

NOT Happy. Yet to win beyond Group 3 level and never landed a blow in the Platinum Jubilee. Needs to have her sights lowered.

Jockey: Sean Levey

ROMANTIC PROPOSAL 2

ROM com. Group 1 winner over 5f but likes this trip too. Best has come with some ease in the ground so it may be a bit quick here.

Jockey: Chris Hayes

CADAMOSTO 2

SAD Cad. Good fourth to Perfect Power in the Commonwealth Cup when staying well on quick ground. Needs to improve plenty to reverse that form.

Jockey: Seamie Heffernan

FLAMING RIB 4

FLAMING hot. Went close in the Commonwealth Cup when perhaps not on the best part of the track. That came after a good effort in a Haydock Group 2 and he looks up to this level. Looks capable of better and has solid place claims.

Jockey: Ben Curtis

KING HERMES 2

FISHER King. Japanese hope who went well in a Group 1 over a mile last time but has plenty of zip. He likes fast ground but should be taken off his feet here.

Jockey: Ryusei Sakai

PERFECT POWER 4

POWER play. Was a speedy two-year-old and didn’t stay the mile of the 2,000 Guineas before storming home to win the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last time. He likes fast ground and won the Middle Park Stakes on the other course here last season. Gets a handy weight allowance and can go mighty close.

Jockey: Christophe Soumillon

TWILIGHT JET 2

JET grounded. Came last in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot when not unfancied after winning a Group 3 at Naas. He has run well here before but this looks a tall order.

Jockey: Leigh Roche

Templegate tip

TAKE Art in the July Cup.

ARTORIUS didn’t get the breaks in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes last time. He had the door closed a couple of times before charging home to grab a close-up third.

The Aussie raider will come on for that UK debut and this slightly smaller field should give him a bigger chance.

Naval Crown and Creative Force were just ahead of him last time and they are hard to separate again. Both should give their running.

Perfect Power loved dropping back to this trip when winning the Commonwealth Cup and can make his presence felt getting weight from the older brigade.
