Kalashnikov still on course for Ryanair at Cheltenham despite New Years Day flop

AMY Murphy is still eyeing a tilt at the Ryanair Chase with stable star Kalashnikov.

The Grade 1 winner flopped when sent off favourite for a valuable handicap at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day.

Kalashnikov could head straight to the Cheltenham Festival without another run

But he was found to have bled in that contest and has subsequently been under the weather.

Newmarket-based Murphy reckons the seven-year-old is over his illness and she has not ruled out heading straight to the Festival without another run.

Kalashnikov, who was second in the 2018 Supreme, is a top-price 25-1 shot with Unibet for the Ryanair. Sign up to Unibet here.

Murphy said: “He was sick after Cheltenham. He bled and then he started coughing a few days after.

“I’d say he was harbouring something and I think that’s the reason he bled. He’s had some antibiotics and he’s absolutely fine.

“We can put a line through that run. He’d never been out of the first two in his life when he has completed.

“He doesn’t have to run between now and the Ryanair unless I’m 100 per cent happy with him, but equally there are races like the Game Spirit.

“He’ll get entries, but we’ll see. He doesn’t have to go anywhere before Cheltenham.”
