La Barrosa enters Dewhurst reckoning as he maintains unbeaten record in Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket

LA BARROSA maintained his perfect record in the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes.

Under a daring Will Buick, Charlie Appleby’s colt left it late to go two-from-two and set up a possible tilt at the Dewhurst.

16-1 shot Dark Lion (left) nearly caused an upset as La Barossa struggled for room

Dark Lion and Qaader cut out much of the running on the Rowley Mile, and Buick was forced to sit tight on the rail throughout.

But his class told late in the day as he battled through the middle of the pair to get up by a length from 16-1 shot Dark Lion.

Winning trainer Appleby said: “We were pleased with how the horse came out of his Ascot win and he’s done some good work since.

“The plan was always to get cover today. Watching it I was quite comfortable even if William wasn’t quite so happy, he wanted a bit of an out.

“But I think his ability came through there, when he got that little bit of a gap he showed some courage and also a bit of class.

“Picking up late here can be quite hard too.”

Future plans are yet to be put in stone, but Appleby hopes he can be supplemented for the Group 1 Dewhurst on October 10 for which Betway made La Barrosa a 4-1 chance.

Stablemate Master Of The Seas has been ruled out of the race so the Godolphin handler hopes to have his replacement in for the seven furlong race.

Appleby continued: “He hasn’t got an entry in the Dewhurst but coming in today we were always going to see what sort of performance he put up.

“On what we’ve seen I think that now has to be up for discussion.

“I feel he’s learnt again today and he’s entitled to come forward some more.

“He travels very well and I wouldn’t want to be doing it the other way around for now.

“I think seven furlongs is his trip for now, he’ll get a mile in time, but while he’s learning this is his right trip.”

Later on the card Andrew Balding’s Ranch Hand stayed on best to triumph in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes.

A drop of rain did just the trick as Oisin Murphy drove home the four-year-old to just get the better of Roger Charlton’s Withhold to land a double on the afternoon.
