Lap Dancing Club Wins Approval to Open Opposite Church During Cheltenham Race Meetings

Controversial Decision

A lap dancing club in Cheltenham has been granted permission to open during every Cheltenham race meeting, despite strong opposition from the community, including the Justice Secretary. Eroticats, which already operates during the town's four-day jumps festival in March, has been approved to operate as a luxury tea and coffee house during the day and a fantasy cocktail bar with themed rooms at night.

Opposition from Local Figures

The decision to allow the club to open opposite a church has sparked controversy. Local MP and Minister for Justice, Alex Chalk, argued that having a sexual entertainment venue near residential areas where children are present would be inappropriate. Meanwhile, Senior Pastor Alwyn Barry of Cambray Baptist Church expressed deep hurt over the proximity of such a business to a place of worship.

Mixed Reactions

Supporters of Eroticats emphasize the safety and enjoyable working conditions they experience at the club. However, Gilli Appleby from Gloucestershire Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre raised concerns about the potential increase in reported rapes and rates of harassment near sexual entertainment venues.

Community Divide

The decision to grant the change in license to venue boss Steven Burrows was met with opposition from over 35 individuals, while 49 letters of support were received. The council, represented by David Willingham, justified the decision by stating that the activity is lawful and licensing exists to ensure its safety, adding that the council cannot take a moral stance on the matter.
