, Leading jockey faces 20-YEAR ban after ‘admitting using electrical shocking device to win horse race’

A LEADING jockey faces a 20-YEAR ban after reportedly admitting using a sick electrical shocking device to win a race.

Top US rider Sammy Mendez could also be hit with a £7,500 fine for his reported use of the illegal aid, according to paulickreport.com.

Mendez could be banned for 20 years after he reportedly admitted using an electrical shocking device to win a race

Mendez, who races mainly at Indiana Grand racecourse in the US, is reported to have said he used the shocking device during training and racing.

A complaint lodged with the Indiana Horse Racing Commission states that a vet found the buzzer on the track after a race.

Dr Katie Naughton is said to have recovered the device following a contest on September 4 this year.

It is reported that Michael Morris, director of security for the racing commission, immediately launched an investigation after being alerted to the buzzer.

Paulickreport.com states Mendez admitted in interviews that he ‘possessed and used the machine on three separate occasions to train horses’.

It also reported that he ‘possessed and used the machine during race one on September 4 2021’.

Mendez won that race on Rock Candy Almighty but now it has been recommended the £8,463 prize be redistrubuted among the other runners.

The jockey last competed on September 13 and was officially banned from racing two days later pending the outcome of the probe.

Mendez, who is from Mexico, can now ask for a hearing into the ‘ongoing’ case.

The jockey was in the midst of his second-most successful year ever with winnings of just over £600,000 from his 138 rides.

Mendez’ best year was 2020 when he won connections more than £670,000 from 135 starts – an average of roughly £5,000 per race.

He has been the leading jockey in sprint races at the Indiana track for the past two seasons.

Just two months ago another jockey was banned for ten years and fined £3,600 for using an electrical shocking device.

Tomas Mejia was kicked off all his rides last Friday after a photo of him celebrating a winner caused widespread alarm.

Stewards were alerted to an image that appeared to show two prongs sticking out of the rider’s left hand.

The prongs looked like they were part of a battery or electrical shocking device.

The photo had been posted on Monmouth Park’s official Facebook page to celebrate Mejia’s first winner since returning from injury in July.

An investigation was launched after eagle-eyed punters spotted the object.

The probe, which referred to the photographic evidence, ruled: “Upon entering the winners’ circle and prior to dismounting from the horse Strongerthanuknow on September 3, 2021, Tomas Mejia was in possession of a prohibited electrical device.”
