Legendary Jumps Jockey Davy Russell to Make Sensational Comeback in Doncaster Charity Race

Russell Comes Out of Retirement for Leger Legends

Renowned jumps jockey Davy Russell is set to make yet another comeback from retirement, as he has agreed to ride in the prestigious Leger Legends race at Doncaster. This unique event, which raises funds for the National Horseracing College and the Injured Jockeys Fund Jack Berry House, is exclusively reserved for former professional jockeys.

Retirement Was Short-Lived for Russell

Russell, a seasoned dual Grand National-winning rider, recently retired from day-to-day riding in April 2022. However, his retirement was cut short when he was convinced to return to the saddle just a few weeks later. The injury of Jack Kennedy, stable jockey for trainer Gordon Elliott, prompted Russell to come out of retirement for a second time.

A Successful Comeback for Russell

During his brief return to the sport, Russell showcased his talent by riding three Grade 1 winners. Notably, two of those victories were at the Grand National meeting, where he triumphed aboard Gerri Colombe and Irish Point. Despite drawing a blank at the Cheltenham Festival, Russell proved that he still had what it takes to compete at the highest level.

One Last Hurrah at Doncaster

Davy Russell has confirmed that he will make his final appearance in the saddle at the prestigious Doncaster racecourse. When asked about his upcoming race, Russell shared his excitement, stating, "I'm looking forward to it; it should be a bit of craic. I've been keeping busy with a few horses here at home. I may have put on a few pounds, but I've not gotten fat!"

A Star-Studded Lineup

Russell will be joining an impressive roster of former jockeys in the Leger Legends race. Notable names include Tom Scudamore, Kieran Fallon, Richard Johnson, Jamie Osborne, and Gary Bardwell. Bardwell, after ten attempts, emerged victorious in the 2021 edition of the race, while last year's title was claimed by Sammy-Jo Bell.
