Listen to hilarious moment commentator calls Sumomomomomomomomo as meaning behind crazy racehorse name is revealed

THIS is the hilarious moment a horse racing commentator calls the name of Sumomomomomomomomo – a Japanese runner who already has cult icon status.

Racehorse names can be no longer than 18 characters.

Sumomomomomomomomo makes life hell for racing commentators

Sumomomomomomomomo pushes that rule to the limit, no doubt making life hell for callers who already have a difficult job.

But this commentator in Japan – and another calling the action in English – seemed to cope admirably.

Bob Werley was the man tasked with calling the action in English.

And he joked about the difficulty of the horse’s name as Sumomomomomomomomo made a late charge for the lead in the six furlong race.

He said: “On the far outside Sumomomomomomomomo coming down strong, just to make my day a little bit harder.”

Sumomomomomomomomo eventually finished third – a big improvement from her debut on Christmas Day, when the filly crossed the line well back.

Despite being from Japan, the horse’s name is nothing to do with sumo wrestling.

In fact it translates as ‘plum and peach are the same’.

It is believed the name comes from the title of the popular Manga comic book Sumomomo Momomo: The Strongest Bride on Earth.

That name was based on the Japanese tongue twister: Sumomo mo momo, momo mo momo, sumomo mo momo mo momo no uchi, which means plums are peaches, and peaches are peaches, and plums and peaches are both types of peaches.

With that in mind, commentators will be lucky the horse wasn’t given the full version.
