SPEED, speed, speed!
That’s what it’s all about on the penultimate day of Glorious Goodwood with the world-class Battaash primed to take centre stage.
The Batmobile, as I like to call him, goes in the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes at 3.15pm and looks nigh-on impossible to beat in the five-furlong dash.
Battaash is trying to do what Stradivarius did on Tuesday, by landing the same Goodwood race for a fourth year in succession, and I for one think he is a good thing for Charlie Hills and Jim Crowley.
He’s just faster than the rest, as he showed in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The coverage gets under way on ITV on Friday with a Group 3 for fillies and mares over 7f.
ONE MASTER should be far too good for this lot, for all that she might prefer some more juice in the ground.
The William Haggas-trained mare is a proper Group 1 performer and this is her perfect trip. Tom Marquand is on board – the only negative is she loves the mud.
Another Group 3 follows, this time for three-year-olds over 1m. Another hard to oppose with KHALOOSY standing out on his win at Royal Ascot for Roger Varian and Crowley.
The son of Dubawi hacked up in the Britannia and he has a rating which certainly allows him to have every chance of taking this.
After those Group events a tough handicap over 1m. I’m probably mad, but I will give WILLIE JOHN yet another chance at an each-way price.
There is just something about this Roger Varian inmate that makes me feel he still has something to give, although he’ll have to do a lot better than at Ascot last time when he was hopeless.
From a good draw I’m praying Andrea Atzeni can get something out of him and will have a few quid each-way.
Finally on ITV a Group 3 over 1m4f for horses aged four-years-old and above. PABLO ESCOBARR stays this trip strong enough and is ultra consistent for Haggas.
He has to do a bit more here to win but has Marquand up and can be supported each-way at decent odds.
