Matt Chapman talks strength in depth on the Flat, York, his dress sense and more in his latest column

WELL it was a busy old week for yours truly at York.

Then another ITV day yesterday, but it’s been thoroughly enjoyable as well – so who or what has made it to my latest Good Bad Ugly column?

GOOD

The milers are good. Indeed, you could argue the miling division is the only one that has strength in depth.

Let’s face some facts here on the European scene. At the moment Stradivarius is in a league of his own amongst the stayers, and Battaash is easily the best five furlong sprinter.

Over a mile and a quarter, it’s hard to see much beyond Ghaiyyath as being totally dominant.

And over a mile and a half there’s just Love and Enable.

Obviously in time, Serpentine might get into the mile and a half category as a star. But who knows right now?

And it would be wrong to forget about Star Catcher and Logician, who have yet to race in 2020.

But as you can see at the top end many of the divisions in this great sport are lacking competition.

That is not the case with the milers. Mohaather, Palace Pier, Pinatubo and possibly Kameko really do give us a group to enjoy a right old smash up with at some stage.

You could even add Safe Voyage into the mix after his romp at York.

Thank you milers. You are providing much needed competition.

BAD

I’M a racing man through and through, so fashion on the racetrack is not of much interest to me, for all I totally appreciate TV shows trying to attract a wider audience can use fashion on track to great effect.

That said, boy do I wish there had been a fashion segment on ITV last week.

This is one of those occasions when a picture speaks much louder than words. The model, if you don’t know, is Gay Kelleway! Oh my…

UGLY

Speaking of fashion, I get a lot of stick on track for my daily attire.

I could, of course, just wear a dull blue or dark suit every time I am on TV and black shoes. Then no one would ever comment.

But as a man I like to express myself with a bit of colour and certainly have a tie addiction!

Women have so much more choice than men when it comes to racing clobber.

It appears, though, one or two people can’t take my dress sense anymore. I got a tap on the shoulder from trainer Simon Crisford at York and he promised to take me shopping in London to sort me out with what he thinks is decent stuff!

I have decided to take this offer up (hehe) and just hope his pocket is a deep one!
