Meet the female jockey and cage fighter who started MMA because she was a ‘small girl among a lot of male jockeys’

MEET successful jockey Brittany Arterburn, who in 2015 swapped the saddle for the octagon.

The California native made a name for herself in the male-dominated weighing rooms of the US.

Arterburn won her only bout to date by technical knockout

She started out as an apprentice jockey in Maryland and rode 115 winners between 2007 and 2014.

But the following year she decided to turn her hand to MMA.

Arterburn said: “I started training because I was a small girl among a lot of male jockeys on the race track.

“It’s a dangerous setting and people will push you around if you don’t defend yourself.”

And in her sole amateur bout, she beat Shawna Ormsby by technical knockout.

She also instructs Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for kids in Tampa.

She has ridden 122 winners in total from 883 rides, amassing career earnings of $2,049,021 from her time as a jockey.

Arterburn, 35, hasn’t ridden in a race since 2019, when she rode seven horses without a winner.
