MISHRIFF will aim to become the world’s top earning racehorse with victory in the $20million Saudi Cup at racing’s richest-ever meeting.
David Egan famously rode John Gosden’s star to victory in the thriller (last February and gives next weekend’s Breeders’ Cup a miss so he will be spot-on for a return trip to Riyadh.
He banked over £7million for winning last season’s thriller at the King Abdulaziz Racecourse and his career earnings now stands at just over £11million.
If he retains his crown he will rocket past the current highest-earner – Aussie legend Winks – who has won £14.5million.
Gosden said: “It was fantastic to see the horse win the world’s richest race and that will again be his target this winter.
“The Saudi Cup is now a Group 1 and the whole world wants to win it.”
The two-day meeting will now be worth an incredible $35.1million and will be held on Friday February 25 and Saturday February 26.
Prince Bandar Bin Khalid Al Faisal, chairman of the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia, said: “We could never have imagined the immediate impact The Saudi Cup would have on the international racing landscape.
“We are now looking forward to hosting the world’s most valuable race, The Saudi Cup, as a Group 1 for the first time, as well as five Group 3 races on the undercard.
None of this would have been possible without support of the international racing community and, on behalf of the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia, I would like to thank everyone within the industry for the way they have embraced The Saudi Cup.
