Mohaather on course for mouthwatering Siskin clash in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood

RUNAWAY Ascot winner Mohaather is on a collision course with Irish Guineas hero Siskin.

The pair are set to clash in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood later this month in one of the most hotly-anticipated Group 1s of the summer.

Mohaather is on course for the Sussex Stakes

The Marcus Tregoning-trained Mohaather missed the bulk of last season through injury and he was never able to land a blow when an unlucky seventh in the Queen Anne on reappearance.

But he was in a different league to a good field in the Summer Mile on Saturday, sprinting clear inside the final furlong to win by the thick end of four lengths.

The son of Showcasing will now return to Group 1 level in the Sussex on July 29, and Paddy Power make him a 5-2 shot behind 11-8 favourite Siskin.

Tregoning told Sun Racing: “We are very happy with him, he seems to have taken his race extremely well.

“We’ve always known he is a quick horse and he showed that impressive turn of foot at Ascot, but he saw the mile out strongly which was great to see.

“After the Queen Anne episode it was important to get a nice clear run and he has gone and won a Group 2 very easily, so you’ve got to be happy.

“We intend to go the Sussex all being well. He is a strong traveller so whatever pace they go it won’t matter a huge amount to him.

“He has got to give Siskin 8lbs, which is no easy feat as he is the kind of horse that picks up strongly as well. It’s shaping up to be a proper race, and so it should be.”

He continued: “It is essential for our sport to have these kind of races, especially at this moment in time.

“The media coverage for racing since we restarted has been brilliant, I’ve been so impressed with all the television and newspaper coverage. It’s so important to keep us up in the lights.”

The tight turns of Keeneland and the Breeders’ Cup Mile look perfect on paper for Mohaather, but Tregoning said any decision to travel abroad would be made by his owner Sheikh Hamdan.

He said: “It is entirely up to his owner whether he travels for a race like the Breeders’ Cup Mile, but I wouldn’t rule anything out with this horse.

“It’s the kind of race you think would suit him as he has got that tactical speed. It’s a totally different ball game over there, but we will see how things pan out during the rest of the season first.”
