The gelding is said to have come through the procedure and is standing under his own steam.

And Fanshawe said the veteran speedster would have a home for life at his Pegasus Stables.

Fanshawe tweeted: “Sadly we had to retire our wonderful old stalwart The Tin Man this morning after he was injured on The Limekilns.

“He has had surgery and is now standing. He will continue to be spoilt and have a home at Pegasus for life.”

The Tin Man made his debut back in 2015 and won nine times, amassing almost £1.3 million in earnings and bagging three wins at Group 1 level.

His first came in the British Champions Sprint in 2016, he won the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot the following year before adding the Haydock Sprint Cup to his haul in 2018.

Racing fans paid tribute to the horse on social media.

One said: “What a wonderful horse a wonderful servant to horse racing and a wonderful legend to his adoring army of followers and supporters.

“Sparkling heart. He’s just a superstar.”

Another tweeted: “Oh mym sorry to hear but happy retirement to the legend.

“What a consistently brilliant horse he has been.”

And another added: “Oh, poor lad. But very very glad he’s come through surgery fine, and I know he’ll still be King of Pegasus!”

Just two days ago, Fanshawe tweeted images of The Tin Man bucking and kicking at home.

The post said: “This idiot is 9 years old and should know better.

“THE TIN MAN showing that there is still life in the old boy yet. He looks as if he is looking forward to getting back on the racecourse.”
