Mystery as British Jockey Stood Down from Racing Amid Disciplinary Inquiry

Immediate Effect

A prominent British jockey, Harry Bentley, has been abruptly barred from participating in any racing events. The Jockey Club released a statement on Friday evening, announcing that Bentley is forbidden from competing until he has attended an inquiry regarding an undisclosed disciplinary matter.

Successful Career in Hong Kong

Bentley, a Group 1-winning rider, has been making waves in the lucrative Hong Kong racing scene since April 2021. With seven wins from 69 rides and prize money earnings of nearly £1 million, the 31-year-old jockey has established himself as a force to be reckoned with.

Unresolved Disciplinary Issue

The details surrounding the disciplinary matter that led to Bentley's suspension remain unclear. The Jockey Club's statement did not provide any specific information regarding the nature of the issue.

Similar Case Involving Silvestre de Sousa

This incident echoes a previous incident involving another British jockey, Silvestre de Sousa. Earlier this year, De Sousa was also stood down by the Hong Kong Jockey Club for a betting-related offense. However, he is currently appealing the severity of his ten-month ban.

De Sousa, who was accused of "facilitating" his fellow jockey Vagner Borges in placing a bet, pleaded guilty at the initial hearing. His appeal, which was scheduled to take place on Monday, has been dropped, and De Sousa will have his deposit refunded.

It is important to note that there is no indication that Bentley's case is related to betting.
