Nine-time Irish champion jockey Pat Smullen dies from cancer aged 43

LEADING jockey Pat Smullen has died, aged 43.

The nine-time Irish champion rider passed away in hospital in Dublin on Tuesday evening.

Smullen was diagnosed with cancer in 2018

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2018, bringing to an end a wonderful career in the saddle.

Smullen rode for several leading yards but formed a particularly formidable partnership with Dermot Weld.

He won multiple Group 1 races around the world, including the 2016 Derby at Epsom aboard Harzand.

His treatment was initially a success, but his condition deteriorated in recent months.

During his illness, he helped raise over €2.5 million for cancer research in Ireland through an Irish Champions Weekend legends race.

He is survived by his wife Frances and their three children, Hannah, Paddy and Sarah.
