Oliver Stammers offers positive update after being airlifted to hospital with nasty injury at Chester

APPRENTICE jockey Oliver Stammers has spoken publicly for the first time since his horror fall at Chester.

The young rider came down on teh first bend at Chester on Friday evening and was eventually airlifted to hospital.

Chester is one of the tightest tracks to ride in England

His horse, Sir Min, clipped heels with another horse and came down early in the race.

Stammers stayed down after the incident and received lengthy treatment and as a result racing was delayed by close to an hour.

Medics treated Stammers on site before he was flown to Aintree Hospital in a helicopter.

But the jockey tweeted a positive update on Sunday.

He said: “Overwhelmed by all the well wishes, I can’t thank you all enough!

“So frustrating to be out at such a crucial time in the season but hopefully won’t be too long.

“Special thanks to the team Chester Races and Aintree Hospital!”

Stammers mainly rides for top trainer Mark Johnston and is enjoying his best season to date with 19 winners.

Sir Min’s trainer Ian Williams confirmed his horse was fine after the fall.

Stammers’ weighing room colleague Andrew Mullen said after the fall: “He is a bit sore and feeling sick from the morphine but nothing serious at the minute, he’s told me to tell everyone he’s OK.”
