LEGENDARY horseracing figure Prince Khalid Abdullah has died at the age of 83.
The owner of iconic horses such as Frankel, Enable and Kingman was a true giant of the racing world for the past 40 years.
SunSport’s Matt Chapman said: “One of the greatest owner breeders has passed in Prince Khalid Abdullah.
“Dancing Brave. Frankel. Enable. Oasis Dream. Kingman. The list is endless.
“Thank you for everything you have done for the sport of kings.”
The Saudi-born billionaire owned Juddmonte Farms, a powerhouse of racing worldwide.
His famed green, white and pink silks were a favourite of fans, not least because his horses won with such amazing regularity.
Top of the pile was Frankel, the British thoroughbred regarded by many as the greatest horse ever.
Prince Khalid, who enjoyed a close relationship with Frankel’s late trainer Sir Henry Cecil, won just under £3million from the flat superstar’s exploits.
That included the incredible 2000 Guineas win in 2011, held by many to be the best performance by any horse ever.
But ask those in the sport and they will say the money did not matter – it was all about the joy he got from his equine heroes.
Douglas Erskine Crum, CEO of Juddmonte Farms, said: “The whole of Juddmonte feels a huge sense of loss.
“Prince Khalid will always be remembered as a quiet, dignified, benevolent family man, whose horses spoke for him.
“He leaves a legacy that will stand the test of time. His contribution to the development of the thoroughbred will have long-lasting effects.”
Prince Khalid had 118 winners at Group One level – the top tier of racing.
And he amassed more than 500 winners at stakes level – cementing his position as a titan.
The cause of death was not immediately made public.
But the racing world was united in grief at the loss of one of the sport’s key figures.
Famed trainer Fergal O’Brien said: “A true giant of the sport. RIP Prince Khalid Abdullah.”
