A PROTESTER is tackled at the Epsom Derby today as a plot to disrupt the race was foiled.

The man sprinted on to the racecourse just as the classic began at 1.30pm.

He was dragged off the home straight by police and stewards while a woman’s attempts to get on the course was scuppered.

She was handcuffed just as horses thundered across the finish line.

Police arrested 31 activists despite the Animal Rising protest group having vowed to do nothing to endanger horses and riders.

The Jockey Club blasted their “deplorable and mindless actions” and vowed to prosecute.

Julie Harrington, of the British Horseracing Authority, also condemned the course trespasser.

She said: “I’m grateful to Epsom’s security team for their swift response to ensure the race could be completed safely.”

Former Home Secretary Priti Patel watched Auguste Rodin claim victory in the race.

Winning rider Ryan Moore said: “It seems to have gone off without a hitch and I think that is a very good sign.”

Of those arrested, 12 were held in the Surrey course’s grounds and 11 were nicked in the early hours in Mitcham, South London, and Byfleet, Surrey.

Eight more were arrested on their way to Epsom.
