Punters Unhappy with Small Field for Juddmonte International at York

Punters were left disappointed after only four horses were announced for the £1million Juddmonte International race at York. Despite the return of star horse Paddington, the lack of competition has caused frustration among racegoers.

Field of Four for Juddmonte International

Out of the highly anticipated four-runner race, notable omissions include Desert Crown, last year's Derby winner, who is recovering from surgery following a fetlock injury. The small field leaves just two contenders, Paddington and Mostahdaf.

Paddington, on a quest for a fifth Group 1 victory, faces his biggest challenge yet against runaway Prince Of Wales's winner Mostahdaf. While regular rider Jim Crowley is serving a suspension, Frankie Dettori will step in as a more than capable replacement.

Punters Disapprove of Small-Field Race

Despite the potential for a thrilling tussle between Paddington and Mostahdaf, punters are not pleased with the lack of competition in this high-stakes race. Many express their disappointment over the small field, calling it a disgrace and an insult to the prestigious event.

One racegoer stated, "Trainers and owners moan about prize money but don't support these races." Another added, "Four runners in a Group 1 race which has £1 million worth of prize money is an embarrassment and an insult to York."

Furthermore, there was further disappointment as only six runners were declared for the Acomb and five for the Great Voltigeur on the opening day.
