QPR striker Charlie Austin lands first managerial role in £2million Racing League

CHARLIE Austin will swap the boots for the clipboard as he leads Goat Racing into the brand new Racing League.

The QPR striker is no stranger to the racing world and will take charge of his squad in a brand new 12-team competition which kicks off in two weeks.

Austin has recently signed for QPR after spells in the Premier League

Each team will consist of a roster of jockeys and trainers that will have up to 30 horses in their stable.

Six evening meetings will be hosted at the likes of Windsor, Newcastle and Doncaster, starting on July 29.

A total of six races will be held at each fixture, each worth £50,000 a pop. Teams will rack up points with bonus prizes for the top team and jockey after the finale.

Austin’s team consists of trainers George Scott, Charlie Fellowes, Tom Clover and Hugo Palmer.

Jockeys Callum Shepherd, Laura Pearson and James Doyle will do the steering for Austin.

The total prize pot is over £2 million, and trainers have welcomed the initiative given the cut in prize money across the sport in recent years, mainly down to COVID-19.

Trainer George Baker is part of the BullionVault team with fellow handlers Gary Moore, David Menuisier and Amanda Perrett.

He said: “Racing League is a great concept and has come at a time when there is so much focus on prize money, and issues surrounding it.

“The idea of six meetings, which each include six races all worth £50,000 for horses rated 0-90 is incredibly exciting and appealing for owners and all involved.

“Horseracing needs to follow other sports, such as cricket, which has developed new formats, including Twenty20 and The Hundred. In my opinion Racing League offers that for the sport.

“Its format is dedicated to bringing new and old fans to the racecourse, it’s good for the sport on the whole, and its concept is a viable and immersive option for racing.”
