RACING was abandoned at Wincanton after jockey Major Charlie O’Shea suffered a horror fall.

Two air ambulances were called to the West Country track as the rider required urgent medical attention.

Two air ambulances were called to Wincanton Racecourse

He unseated from Paudie at the second fence in the New John Dufosee Novices’ Hunters’ Chase.

Officials at the track quickly made the decision to abandon the meeting and the last race.

Clerk of the course Daniel Cooper said: “Charlie unseated in the last race and he’s still receiving medical attention.

“The doctors want to focus on that and we only had a bumper to go, we felt we need to focus on that with the medical resources we have here today.

“A second air ambulance is now in attendance. As soon as Charlie is fully stabilised we’ll be able to provide more details.”

Cooper added on Racing TV: “He has had a nasty fall in the back straight, but we’ve got all the medical team there helping him at the moment.

“The decision was made to focus on that and we’ve called off the last race to make it crystal clear and not delay people unnecessarily.”

O’Shea, 40, served with 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery for much of his time as a regular and now lives in Cornwall.

He is now a naval gunfire liaison officer in the Royal Artillery reserves and recently one the historic Royal Artillery Gold Cup at Sandown on Rolling Dylan.

The amateur jockey has five wins to his name under rules.
