Jockeys Up in Arms

Racing chiefs have made a U-turn following a furious backlash from Flat jockeys over the plan to hold additional Flat meetings this weekend. The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) had considered staging extra all-weather fixtures on Saturday and Sunday due to the freezing temperatures posing a threat to jumps racing.

Week Off Demanded

The BHA's proposal was met with strong opposition from jockeys, who argued that they deserve a break. Jason Hart, a top jockey, expressed his disappointment, stating, "It shows just what the BHA think of racing's participants. We get one week off a year – one week." Dougie Costello, a Group 1 winner, suggested that a jump all-weather meeting could be organized to support jump jockeys who miss out on rides and income, but he noted that bookies are aware that the turnover on those cards is poor. Trainer Alice Haynes added that trainers have not been consulted and emphasized that a Flat racing break should be exactly that.
