RACING fans fell in love with Irish trainer Mick Winters – then joked they needed subtitles to understand him!

The hero trainer rolled in the mud after his 16-1 shot Chatham Street Lad demolished rivals to win the £100,000 Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Fans absolutely fell in love with the Irish trainer, even if they needed subtitles to understand his thick Cork accent

Winters told SunSport he would ‘make quite a commotion’ in the paddock should his outside chance land the spoils on Saturday.

And sure enough the ITV cameras were there to see him fall to the floor and roll in the mud after claiming the Grade 3 contest over fences.

Winters said: “I said if he [jockey Darragh O’Keeffe] won, I would do like the pig and roll in the muck as that’s what the pig does, so I had to back it up.”

But it was at that point that some viewers confessed to having no idea what the man with the thick Cork accent was saying.

ITV Racing presenter Mick Fitzgerald admitted: “Mick doesn’t try and make it hard [to understand him], it is hard!

“But he’s such a good fella and a brilliant trainer.”

Watching Winters on TV, one fan said: “Somebody on here said we should get subtitles for the Mick Winters interview.”

Another joked: “We need subtitles for Mick Winters for our UK friends.”

A fellow Twitter user wrote: “Any chance you could put subtitles up for the Mick Winters interview?”

One comment read: “Mick Winters taking me right back to childhood holidays in Cork, not understanding a bloody word and nodding vigorously at all times.”

While a fellow fan said: “I can’t understand a word Mick Winters is saying to @nickluck on @RacingTV and yet this is a thoroughly enjoyable interview.”

Racing fans absolutely adore Irish trainer Winters

Explaining how much the biggest win of his career meant to him, Winters added: “It was outstanding – it was a local jockey as well. He has come down to school on the horse lately and the horse has improved.

“The owners have always had horses in and they have a couple of pubs locally and things. In fairness he won well in Cork [last time out]. This is spectacular.

“I was confident we would run a blinder. Once he got over the last fence, I was hopeful after that.

“I don’t know where we might go next, but hopefully we might be back here [for the Festival] or at Aintree.”
