Racing League: 5 things to watch in Week Five as tight at top of table and Karen Carney joins Sky Sports team

WEEK Five of the blockbuster £2million Racing League takes place at Lingfield on Thursday evening.

Last week at Windsor meant plenty of changes to the standings and with just 12 races left, there’s still all to play for.

Carney on the mic

Top football pundit Karen Carney will join the likes of Alex Hammond and Leona Mayor on your screen this evening.

The former England ace will be a regular presenter on Sky’s all new coverage of the Women’s Premier League which kicks off in the coming weeks.

And after the likes of Michael Holding and David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd kept us entertained through the opening weeks, Carney is this week’s special guest.

Tight at the top

Any team in the top five could shoot back to the top of the standings with a win in the opener this evening.

Team ThoroughBid sit pretty in number one, but it looks set to go down to the wire unless one squad has a dream week at Lingfield.

Only 16 points separate Team ThoroughBid, Goat Racing, Talksport, Team Swish and Team BullionVault. It’s all to play for.

Age just a number

Ten-year-old Shamshon raced for the 100th time at Brighton recently and the veteran is going as strong as ever.

Once rated in the 100s, Stuart Williams’ ace isn’t the force of old but not one to be ruled out at this level.

He’s earned nearly £200,000 for connections over the years and top apprentice Marco Ghiani takes the ride. He could yet show the youngsters another trick or two.

Jockeying for position

The fight to be top Racing League jockey is also set to go down to the last week.

Queen of the team competitions Hayley Turner roared into the lead last week at Windsor and is 20 points clear of her nearest challenger Jack Mitchell.

Saffie Osborne is in third on 157 points, seven behind Mitchell. All three are clearly after the trophy with a busy book of rides between the trio at Lingfield tonight.

Turner is on 184 points

Market movers

Punters are siding with the top of the league Team Thoroughbid. Not only are they the 5-2 market leaders for the overall competition, but a couple of their runners tonight have been well-backed.

In the opener, Kool Moe Dee has been chopped from 9-1 into 11-2 despite a wide draw and in the 5.40 Theotherside has also been punted.

For the same combination of Richard Hannon and jockey Sean Levey, the four-year-old is now 8-1 from 12-1 with William Hill.
