Racing Welfare pulling out all the stops as charity’s services in demand like never before

RACING Welfare are pulling out all the stops at a time like no other for the industry.

The charity that helps those in need across the sport have had their fundraising activities stopped in their tracks.

And their emergency appeal aims to raise half a million before the year is out after a huge shortfall, with the usual fundraising activities cancelled due to COVID.

This is despite Racing Welfare’s services being required like never before as the industry at all levels suffers.

But the team has thought on their feet and the racing world has rallied around events like the Furlong Factor and the latest online auction backed by greats like Nicky Henderson, Coolmore and Godolphin.

Mark Loades, Head of Fundraising, said:  “The pandemic meant we lost pretty much all of our planned fundraisers for the year.

“We’ve had to come up with new ways of raising money, with the overall figure that we need to reach for the year sitting at £500k.

“Hence we set up our Covid-19 Emergency Appeal in April, which aims to raise this total to bridge the gap in income.

“We have to raise money in order to keep offering our services to racing’s people and the increased demand for help this year has made our efforts more vital than ever.

“We’ve received incredible support from those within the industry as well as outside and we are enormously grateful to everyone who has donated or raised money for the appeal so far.

“The Great Racing Welfare Auction is a super example of a fundraising event that we’ve been able to deliver virtually.

“With over 100 lots on offer we have an auction that really does have something for everyone in it.”

Nothing sums up the spirit behind Racing Welfare more than Rebecca Elvin.

After being put on furlough from her job at Cheltenham Racecourse she got in touch with Racing Welfare to offer her services.

With more demand than ever she was quickly put to work on the phones, taking regular calls to offer a friendly chat.

But it’s not just phone calls the charity help out with.

Support is available for a wide range of life’s challenges, including physical health, mental health, bereavement, careers advice, housing, money advice, illness, addiction, relationships and retirement.
