Radio 4 presenter’s X-rated slip of the tongue on horse racing tip leaves listeners mortified

RADIO 4 listeners were mortified after a presenter dropped an X-rated clanger when giving a horse racing tip.

Garry Richardson, 65, was providing his picks for Wednesday’s action when he made his accidental slip of the tongue.

Richardson’s embarrassing slip of the tongue was picked up by Today listeners

Richardson had highlighted the Alastair Ralph-trained Seymour Sox in the 12.40 at Haydock.

But in a textbook gaffe, he called the runner ‘Seymour Cox’.

Richardson, who in an interview earlier this year insisted ‘I’m not Alan Partridge’, said: “Here are the selections we’ve picked out, two for Haydock.

“At 20 to 1 it’s number eight, Seymour Cox.”

Fortunately the experienced presenter recognised his error by the time the next update rolled round at 7.30am.

Still, the hilarious error had been picked up by listeners, with many saying it was like Bart Simpson’s famous prank calls to bartender Moe Szyslak in The Simpsons.

Others saw the slip as a chance to make their own jokes.

In response to a clip of Richardson’s mistake, one said: “Wins by a short head.”

Another commented: “But how’s the going? If it’s soft, it’s an outside chance.”

One tweet read: “Expected to win by a length.”

Referencing The Simpsons gags, another listener posted: “I see Bart Simpson is doing work experience at Radio 4.”

One wrote: “Sadly, lost by a length to Hugh Jass!”

While another said: “Strong Moe’s Tavern vibes.”

Not everyone saw the funny side, though, with one listener revealing: “My phone was connected to the speaker downstairs in my office which just proudly announced this, loudly, to my whole house and probably next door.”

Picking a name is one of the best parts of owning a horse – and there have been some controversial ones over the years.

Last December punters were in uproar after a runner with a ‘racist’ name competed at Wolverhampton.

The horse’s title was quickly changed once the error was realised.

A runner in Japan made worldwide headlines after being given a name that makes commentators cry.

And a few others with controversial titles have slipped through the net as well.
