Rain fails to dampen Derby spirits as 4,000 punters make way to Epsom for racing in pouring rain

THE rain has failed to dampen spirits as 4,000 punters made their way to Epsom for Ladies’ Day.

The opening day of the Cazoo Derby Festival kicks off this afternoon but the grey skies haven’t budged all morning.

Masks and umbrellas are the order of the day
A sellout crowd of 4,000 is expected each day at Epsom

But the rain has not stopped all morning in wet Surrey

Never to young for a day at the races

Punters were quick to make use of the little cover available

A big change from the weather just yesterday…

The Cazoo Oaks is the big race on Day 1, before the Derby itself takes centre stage tomorrow at 4.30.

And with crowds steadily on their way back, tickets sold out like hot cakes for both days at Epsom.

But punters will be on the search for umbrellas as well as winners as the rain continued.

Bolshoi Ballet is the big Derby favourite, while stablemate Santa Barbara heads the betting for today’s Oaks.

However, our top tipster Templegate fancies Zeyaadah who has been popular with punters already today.

You can get all his tips for the day here.

The Frankie Dettori factor is already in full swing, too.

He will ride Snowfall for Aidan O’Brien in the Oaks, before he gets the leg-up on leading British hope John Leeper tomorrow in the Derby.

One punter caught short…

Paper, umbrella, mask – sorted

Sharing is caring

The Derby is worth over £1.25 million this year, with the Oaks just under £650,000.

Cazoo are sponsoring the Festival for the first time. Keep up to date with all the news, tips and gossip with our Live Blog.
