Red-hot Oaks favourite Emily Upjohn warms up for Classic with impressive gallop at Epsom under Frankie Dettori

JOHN GOSDEN gave his leading Oaks contender the thumbs Up after her racecourse gallop at Epsom.

The unbeaten Emily Upjohn stretched her legs under Frankie Dettori yesterday at the Cazoo Derby Gallops Morning.

Trainer John Gosden was on hand to watch the Oaks favourite at Epsom

Both Gosden and Dettori were keen to give her a sighter of the unique track ahead of next Friday’s Oaks.

And the inexperienced three-year-old, who is the red-hot even-money antepost favourite for the fillies’ Classic, breezed around the world-famous course like an old pro.

Gosden said: “Frankie felt it would be nice to come here and take a look at the track and get a feel of the place, seeing as she has only raced three times in her life.

“We have done it before, bringing horses here to get a feel of the place, and found it very useful.

“She behaved great and she moved very well. She got her leads right coming down the hill and she quickened up nicely.

“I think that will have benefitted her a lot mentally. To come for the day out will do her some good. I think she rather enjoyed herself.

“You have to be able to quicken up off a decent gallop around Epsom and she is capable of that.

“Hopefully we will get good ground next week. Last year it rained all day and we wouldn’t want that.”

Gosden has won the Oaks three times in recent years, with top-notchers Enable, Taghrooda and Anapurna.

He said it was far too soon in Emily Upjohn’s career to start comparing her to the legendary Enable, but reckons she is of a similar level to his other two winners.

He added: “I would say she is in the Taghrooda league. She just has that ability to travel and quicken over a long distance.

“She was only playing at half speed under Frankie but she did it very easily which was nice to see.”

Gosden is also set to run 5-1 second favourite Nashwa in the Oaks next week.

She will be ridden by Hollie Doyle, but Gosden said he was more confident that Emily Upjohn would get the 1m4f trip than he was about Nashwa.

He said: “Emily Upjohn is guaranteed to get the mile and a half, but that’s not the case with Nashwa – they are different types of filly.

“We were never thinking about bringing her to Epsom as she only ran at Newbury the other day, but she is in good form.”
