SNOW LANTERN lit up a red-hot Falmouth Stakes on Day 2 of the July Festival.
A top notch field of fillies were in town but Richard Hannon’s three-year-old mowed them down in the dying strides.
And eight years after her mum Sky Lantern was denied in the stewards room in the same race, Hannon felt justice was finally served.
He said: “It’s very special as there was a score to settle and somehow the owners have never had a Group 1 winner. She finally settled today and it all came together, she’s not just good, she’s very good.”
The field of 13 quickly moved to the far rail and jockey Sean Levey briefly looked in trouble with little room to push into.
But it might have been a blessing in disguise as she had been too keen in defeats at York and Royal Ascot.
Levey found the gears he needed and once in the clear she glided past favourite Alcohol Free and eventual runner-up Mother Earth.
A trip to Glorious Goodwood is next on the cards with the option of taking on the boys in the Sussex Stakes one possible route.
Hannon said of the 6-1 winner: “It’s so hard to enjoy these moments! It’s just relief more than anything.
“She’ll stay ten furlongs in time, but we’ll stick to a mile now. There’s the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and she’s in the Sussex too. There’s the Juddmonte International later in the year.
“That was special for everyone involved, and for Sean too. He’s been riding well but these days really elevate you.”
Girl power was the order of the day as Andrew Balding’s Sandrine shot to the top of the betting for next year’s 1000 Guineas.
She extended her unbeaten run to three with a thumping win in the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.
