Royal Ascot 2020: The Lir Jet arrives just on time to win Norfolk Stakes for Oisin Murphy and Michael Bell

THE rags to riches story of The Lir Jet took one more kerching as Oisin Murphy drove home Michael Bell’s youngster in the dying strides.

He mugged Wesley Ward’s Golden Pal inches from the line in the Norfolk Stakes as Murphy screamed with delight – a noise emphasised by the empty grandstands.

The horse was bought for a mere penny in racing terms at £8,000 and was bought by powerhouse Qatar Racing after his debut Yarmouth win.

And it was job’s a good’n after he made it two from two in the Group 2 sprint for juveniles for trainer Michael Bell.

It was Bell’s son Nick who bought the horse originally and has presumably gone on to make a pretty pocket for his troubles.

Bell said: “During the race I was a bit worried when the leader had so much of a lead but Oisin obviously felt he had it under control.

“He’s learnt how to race today and I think he’ll be even better next time.

“Sheikh Fahad was watching on TV when he won at Yarmouth and he sent me a text asking if he’s for sale and the rest is history.

“I’m particularly pleased as Nick is my son and it’s his deal, he must take some credit.

“I’d be inclined to point him at something like the Prix Morny, maybe the Nunthorpe down the line. He’s definitely one of the quickest horses I’ve ever had.”
