Templegate’s Gold Cup tip and picks for day four of Cheltenham

Football hero Ferguson arrived at Cheltenham with his former captain and fellow club legend Bryan Robson.

The 80-year-old is wearing a snazzy purple blazer and tie with blue trousers and brown shoes.

The gelding has shown improved form since being sent over fences, winning four of his seven starts and finishing second on the other three occasions.

He has already earned his owners nearly £200,000 and put himself in line for a crack at this elite contest when beating the 2018 Gold Cup winner Native River at Aintree in December.

Ferguson has enjoyed plenty of success with his racing interests, which include a share in dual King George VI Chase winner Clan Des Obeaux.

Speaking about Protektorat’s chances, trainer Dan Skelton said: “He looks fantastic.

“We have been able to prep him specifically for the Gold Cup and I’m very happy with this horse.

“He puts his head down and his knees come up which gives me positive thoughts for the Gold Cup.

“He won’t mind getting dirty seeing it out. If it turns into one of those gritty Gold Cups, I won’t be afraid of having him there.”

The Gold Cup is one of the richest races in Britain, with last year’s winner Minella Indo scooping just over £260,000.

This year’s prize will be around £350,000.
