‘Spooky’ abandoned racecourse left to rot as heartbroken fans mourn loss of iconic track

An abandoned racecourse near Kent, which was bought for £25 million, has been left to rot, as haunting photos reveal the derelict state of the once-iconic site. Fans of the Folkestone racecourse have been left heartbroken by its demise.

Derelict and unloved

The famous stand at the Folkestone racecourse now lies derelict and unloved after more than a decade since the track closed. The site, which was purchased for £25 million, has since fallen into decay.

Plans for housing development

The racecourse has been left to rot, despite plans to build 8,500 homes on the site. The sale of the land to the local council for £25 million was intended to fund the construction of new homes adjacent to the track.

A loss of racing history

The once-popular 1m3f oval circuit held its final ever race over ten years ago. The track, which hosted more than 20 meetings a year at its peak, saw famous jockeys such as Frankie Dettori and AP McCoy compete. Its closure has left fans mourning the loss of an iconic racing venue.

Decaying infrastructure

Photos of the abandoned racecourse show the deterioration of its once-thriving infrastructure. The famous grandstand still stands, but with signs of decay. Orange safety barriers now obstruct the entrance, and the parade ring and Victorian Bar and Grill have become overrun with weeds and are protected by railings.

Nostalgia for the past

The haunting images of the abandoned racecourse have sparked nostalgia among fans. Many have taken to social media to share their memories of the track's glory days and express their sadness over its current state. Comments from fans include lamenting the emptiness of the course and recalling the lively atmosphere of race days.

A planned future

Despite its current state, there are plans for the development of the abandoned racecourse site. The local council has submitted a planning application for the construction of 8,500 homes. The first phase of the development is reportedly underway, with the first home set to be available for sale in September 2025.
