, Storm Ciara: ALL racing in Britain and Ireland cancelled as gales and heavy rain halt Exeter, Southwell and Punchestown

IT was Storm Ciara three, racing nil on Sunday as all meetings across Britain and Ireland were cancelled.

Gale force winds meant Exeter, Southwell and Punchestown were all forced to call their fixtures off.

Jumps action at Exeter was first to fall by the wayside as officials called racing off prior to their 8am inspection.

The course said: “Unfortunately Racing today has been Abandoned. Wind speeds have reached unacceptable mph gusts this morning, and our localised forecast predict this to continue for the remainder of today, affecting our racing operation, public safety and grandstand areas.”

The all-weather card at Southwell was next to go as the track said winds were too high to ensure equine and human safety.

Punchestown were confident their card would get the thumbs up but were forced to act after heavy rain fell before 9am.

The Irish track tweeted: “Following a further 27mm since 8am racing is now cancelled.”

The weather is set to improve tomorrow but Plumpton has called an inspection for 8am tomorrow.

Winds are expected to ease before then. But up to 20mm of rain is forecast on ground already described as heavy, soft in places.
