Superstar Constitution Hill’s return ‘in the air’ but Jonbon is back says trainer Nicky Henderson

, Superstar Constitution Hill’s return ‘in the air’ but Jonbon is back says trainer Nicky Henderson

NICKY HENDERSON hopes he will be King of the Hill at the end of an important week.

The Seven Barrows maestro is all set to take the wraps off brilliant Constitution Hill and will also send Jonbon over fences for the first time.

Constitution Hill is usually partnered by Nico De Boinville

It looks like being a crucial few days for Hendo, 71, who has had a slow start to the season compared with big rival Paul Nicholls.

But that could all change with Jonbon set to take on Nicholls’ Monmiral at Warwick on Wednesday in a novice chase.

Then his unbeaten Supreme winner Constitution Hill, who is favourite for the Champion Hurdle, could head to Ascot on Saturday for the Grade 2 Coral Hurdle.

Hendo said: “We’re starting to get going. The rain has come for the most part.

“Warwick will be fine on Wednesday and Jonbon is ready to go, he’s fit and ready.

“His jumping has been good at home, he’s done plenty of schooling.

“There haven’t been many races for him, given the ground and other things, so this has been on our radar for a couple of weeks.

“It’s a strong race, though.”

But just like at Cheltenham’s November meeting, where Hendo pulled out the majority of his runners because of the unseasonably quick ground, the trainer is keeping a close eye on the forecast ahead of Constitution Hill’s return.

He said: “It’s all up in the air at the moment.

“Constitution Hill is in great form, he’s definitely ready to go, but they’re going to need a hell of a lot of rain, if I’m honest. Otherwise nothing will be happening at all!

“They’ve said the ground is good to firm in places, so that says all you need.

“There is some rain forecast but we can only wait and see. We’re going to have to keep a very close eye on the weather.

“We’ll decide about that later in the week.”
