Superstar horse Alpinista forced into shock retirement days before tilt at £2.4million payday in Japan Cup

ARC heroine Alpinista has been forced into a shock retirement just days before a tilt at a £2.4million payday.

Sir Mark Prescott’s stable star has been retired to stud after ‘suffering a slight setback’ in training.

Alpinista has been forced into a shock retirement just days before she was due to run in a multi-million pound race

The trainer said: “Unfortunately Alpinista has suffered a slight setback and will not now be able to take her chance in the Japan Cup.

“It’s a great shame as the JRA have been fantastic in making arrangements for the trip and I can’t thank them enough.

“Alpinista was exercised this morning but has now been retired to stud where she will join the great broodmare band of Miss Rausing.

“As William Haggas said [about Baaeed] at the Cartier Awards last night, now the search begins for another one.”

The five-year-old grey has won billionaire owner Kirsten Rausing more than £3m on the track.

Last month’s Arc – where she won Europe’s most prestigious race by half a length from Vadeni – was her crowning achievement.

Alpinista was retired on the back of an incredible eight-race winning streak.

She was famed for her partnership with jockey Luke Morris as much as her brilliance on the racecourse.

Alpinista retires with six Group 1s to her name.

She was the 4-1 ante-post favourite for the Japan Cup later this month.

That was due to be her final race before being retired anyway.

But now her career at stud has been brought forward as a result of the unspecified injury.
