The incredible horse that has never fallen at Aintree set to shine again in Saturday’s Becher Chase for David Pipe

DAVID PIPE hopes Aintree regular Vieux Lion Rouge can spark back to life in Saturday’s/today’s Becher Chase.

The 11-year-old has hopped over an incredible 202 of the infamous Aintree obstacles, completing four Grand Nationals and four Bechers without ever falling.

Vieux Lion Rouge simply loves jumping around Aintree

Pipe’s veteran has jumped more National fences than any horse in history and he returns to his favourite stomping ground once more.

Pipe laughed: “I don’t know what it is, he just lights up for the occasions at Aintree! He’s a remarkable horse.

“He jumps the fences at Aintree better than he does the normal ones.

“He’s jumped 202 of them and his record in the big races speaks for itself.

“Whilst he’s not getting any younger he looks in great form at home and the more rain we get the better his chances.

“Last time out was a pipe-opener for this race and it also got him qualified for the Veterans’ Final so it served a purpose.

“He’s dropped down the weights again now and he knows when he gets to Aintree, I reckon he’s got a shout.”

And Pipe will be double-handed in the big one at Aintree with Ramses De Teillee also set to fly the flag. The bookies make him a 7-1 chance with Vieux Lion Rouge available at 14-1.

Pipe added: “It’s the complete opposite for Ramses De Teillee, he’s only run at Aintree once.

“That was in the 2019 Grand National and it officially says he didn’t finish, that he was pulled-up.

“But he made a mistake at Canal Turn that day and his rein broke, so he did actually finish, just very, very slowly!

“We think it warrants having another go, we had the option of the Welsh Grand National but think we need to come here.

“Some remember coming back here for a second time, and I think he’ll take to it.

“We know he’s in great form, he had a great tussle with Yala Enki at Cheltenham last time where we came out on top.”
