The secret behind ‘thick’ racehorse who stunned punters with incredible 200-1 win but trainer didn’t have a penny on

ICONIC ex-jockey, George Duffield, and trainer-wife, Ann, rated hapless Runninwild among the thickest horses in racing.

Apparently, his brains were in his feet! He had blistering speed, but didn’t know how to use it.

Runninwild (middle) won on his third start under jockey David Allan

Until he flew in at 200-1 at Redcar earlier this week.

Ecstatic Ann revealed: “The penny finally dropped! He’s been quite thick.

“If he’d gone to school, he’d have been bottom of the class, or expelled!

“He’s needed time and patience to learn about racing.

“We run a holiday camp alongside our yard, and I think he thought the yard was part of that.

“George loves him, and he always rides him at work. He gave him his last gallop before he went out and won.”

“David Allan helped him a lot in his previous run at Carlisle, and he gave him a smashing ride to challenge and win at Redcar, where the ground was better.”

George is now 74, and had ridden more than 2,500 winners when he retired in March 2005.

His 40-year career achievements were rewarded with an MBE in 2002 for services to horseracing.

Ann adds: “George is Mister Livewire. He’s not still for a minute. If there’s a job to be done, he’s on it in a flash. He’s fitter than me.”

And Runninwild?

George Duffield racked up over 2,500 winners in the saddle

From her Sun Hill stables near Middleham, Ann tells Sun readers: “Now that he knows what racing is all about, we expect him to progress and, hopefully, win again, but not at 200-1, of course.

“And, in case you’re wondering, no, we didn’t have a bean on him. All I want from racing is to train winners.”
